PODS Literacy

Like blindness to sight, literacy changes everything

Our work

Three programs.
One continuous path.

Pods Literacy → Foundation

Functional literacy strengthens confidence, upward economic mobility, academic success, and long-term community integration.

What is Pods Literacy

A bridge to safety, autonomy, and participation

Pods Literacy builds a community support system and foundation for lifelong learning. Students learn to read, write, speak English, and become confident in managing daily life—shopping, scheduling appointments, communicating with schools, navigating transportation independently, and accessing community resources.

Traditional ELL can overwhelm students with little native-language literacy or formal schooling. Pods provides phonics, interpretation support, and foundational skills in a culturally informed, all-female setting—preparing students for community college ELL, co-ed learning, work, and public life.

Childcare and fees are never barriers. Each session, ~100 children under 5 join their mothers in free online classes, while ~250 K–12 students benefit from having a functionally literate mother.

How it works

The Pods Literacy Pathway

Three sessions a year, in-person and online, with native-language teachers always one WhatsApp message away.

HOW?

Our four interconnected functional literacy modules—Foundations, Springboard, Runway, and Wings—build English communication, phonics, reading and writing fluency, basic math, and digital literacy through practical, real-world applications.

WHAT?

Students learn to read, write, and communicate essential personal information—including names, birthdates, phone numbers, and addresses—for themselves and their families. They also learn to tell time, make appointments, use transit, shop, and navigate libraries and the U.S. education system.

WHERE?

Classes meet online twice a week for four hours of live instruction, with additional WhatsApp support for homework, fluency practice, and systems navigation. Students learn together with a native English speaker, then practice in small groups led by their Dari- or Pashto-speaking Pods teacher. Sessions are offered in fall, winter, and spring.

WHEN?

Our flexible mobile and hybrid model meets students where they are. Learning takes place online and in neighborhood libraries, apartment community rooms, and parks. WhatsApp Pods extend support between classes and are designed to work on students’ cell phones.

WHO?

Half of our students have no literacy in their native Dari or Pashto. Others have some education but face barriers in traditional English Language Learning classes. AA+ offers a culturally responsive alternative. Every class is team-taught by native Dari, Pashto, and English speakers.

Pod network

A neighborhood-based Pod system — built for trust.

The heart of our program lies in the individualized attention we give each student in their native language. One-on-one conferences at the start and end of each module assess skills and provide feedback.

24/7 access to Dari- and Pashto-speaking teachers via neighborhood WhatsApp pods ensures no question goes unanswered. The results? An 89% average on final exams and a growing network of empowered women, connected by learning and community.
