Suzanne & Farzana
In the Qur’anic tradition, the Ansar were the people of Medina who welcomed and supported the Prophet Muhammad and those arriving in a new land. Today we honor the Ansars who extend that same spirit of friendship by welcoming newcomers to Washington State.
Impact 100 Seattle cohort
Grants from Impact 100 Seattle address the root causes of disparities via trust-based philanthropy, volunteers, visibility, and a working cohort forum with other non-profit grantee leaders.
Langley, WA - Music for the Eyes
The village of Langley on Whidbey Island organized a fundraising event featuring Afghan art and culture. They invited teachers and students to share AA+’s work, plus favorite memories of Afghanistan. Attendees joined neighbor-to-neighbor circles for one-on-one conversations.
VSHSL - Veterans, Seniors, and Human Services Levy of King County
VSHSL grants have made possible technical consultants for database and web site updates, plus workforce and operational support. VSHSL is a voter-approved King County levy that invests in organizations serving veterans, seniors, and designated resilient communities. AA+ is honored to be a selected resilient community partner.
Hazel Miller Foundation (Snohomish County)
The Hazel Miller Foundation’s grant has supported 10 Pods Literacy scholarships, impacting 10 mothers and their ~30 children. Result: increased confidence and skills to engage with schools, healthcare providers, and everyday services.
Their Story is Our Story/No One Left Behind
These organizations partnered with AA+ on a series of Storyshield Workshops in Dari and Pashto for Afghan families around the greater Seattle area. TSOS is also supporting documenting our community’s oral histories.
Esther Benjamin WES CEO & AA+ team
AA+ is a World Education Services coalition member and presented at the Detroit Convening, collaborating with educators, immigrant leaders, and decision-makers from across the US, advancing workforce development and economic inclusion for immigrants. We shared AA+’s community-led model and brought home new insight and momentum for workforce pathways in Washington.
Viets 4 Afghans
Viets 4 Afghans granted AA+ $6,000 to pilot Pods Literacy with 15 students in 2023; one year later, AA+ served 150. Moved by echoes of Saigon’s fall, Seattle’s Vietnamese community mobilized to welcome Afghan refugees after the Taliban takeover. See video.
Undaunted Women
In partnership with Undaunted Women, AA+ helped launch and manage a privately funded Driving Scholarship that enabled 250+ Afghan women in Washington to earn their first driver’s licenses. AA+ continues preparing students with permit-ready literacy skills and Dari/Pashto driving tutorials.
