What was it like when the Taliban arrived in Kabul?

I remember the day the Taliban came. I was outside – I was getting my transcript…People were afraid – I didn’t know what had happened.  The guy in the transcript office said “You should go.” They closed the office. I came out to the road – all of the people were running – students, shopkeepers, everyone, crashing into each other.  I ran and tripped…I heard the Taliban has come. I thought, “This is the end of the world.” Everyone was mostly crying – really hard for everyone to accept that the Taliban had come back. The street that usually took 20 minutes to go home – that day it took one and a half hours. My husband came home from his job and was also afraid. We didn’t understand what we should do. After some days, waiting at home, everyone saw that the Taliban (was targeting) people (like us) who had worked with the U.S. government. We decided we should leave because of security.  I thought they’d kill my husband because he worked for the U.S. We could not live anymore in Afghanistan. My husband couldn’t find a job…

We waited for 9 months for our documents and then came to the U.S. My brother worked with the previous government so we thought they’d kill us (all). That is why (we) came here to have a better life. I think that if (we) go back to Afghanistan, Taliban will kill all of (us).

It is our country now and we’re trying very hard to be a good citizen. It is our aim and it is our hope.
